A Few Last Minute Reminders

Here are a few last minute reminders about tonight:

1-  The Christmas Party will start at 6 pm at the Curry House!  We'll probably wait around for 15 or 20 minutes before we start eating, just to give everyone a chance to get there.  No worries if you are a little late!!!

2-  When you arrive, enter the house through the front door.  I'll have the walkway swept and cleared since it will be a bit dark.  My dog Jack will likely greet you, but don't let him scare you.  He's a doll once he warms up to you.

3-  I'll double check what food you brought with what I have on my list just to make sure I'm giving you the correct number of entries in the raffle.  Once we double check, I'll hand you that number of slips of paper for you to write your name on.  Once you've done that, you'll put them in the bag to draw from later.

4-  We'll eat first, then play Dirty Santa, and then we will do the raffle.  Remember that you don't have to participate in anything you don't want to!  Feel free to just watch Dirty Santa if you like.  Just remember that if you want to play you've got to bring a gift yourself.  Any accessory will do: a scarf, a hat, some jewelry, make-up, cosmetic bags, etc.

5-  Tonight's attire is CHRISTMAS JAMMIES!!!!!!!!!!!!  Don't forget to wear your favorite pair of pajamas!  Best pair wins a prize!!!!

6-  Parking will be TIGHT!!!!  Carpool if you can.  Once the driveway fills up, be sure you are parking right in front of our fence and on our property.  If that fills up, park down at the Country Club and walk back up to the house.  It's not that far, I promise!!!  Just be sure you are not parking on any of our neighbor's property, and be sure that if you aren't parking in the driveway that you aren't blocking it so people can't get out when they need it.

7-  If you are a student who drives and you know you will need to leave early for whatever reason, don't park in the driveway.

8-  This shindig usually lasts around 2 hours.  Since there are more of us this year, it may last a little longer.  We'll try to start Dirty Santa no later than 7 pm so that we are for sure done with that no later than 8 pm.  Middle School students please be sure your parents know when to pick you up, and that they can pick you up whenever they need to!  It's okay to leave early, especially since it is a school night!

I'm SO EXCITED to get this party started!!!!!  I can't wait to see your beautiful faces and create a few memories with you.

Merry Christmas, Y'all!!!!!!

Christmas Party Update

The annual Bordeaux Winterguard Christmas Party will be held on Monday, December 7th, at 6 pm.  It will be hosted at the Curry House, which is located right by Oaks Country Club.  Simply turn onto Country Club Road, and its the first house on your right!!!  Look for the white fence out front!

Naturally, we'll also have food.  If you haven't signed up to bring anything, let me know what you'd like to help out with!!!  I still need lots of folks to bring drinks and chips, and there's plenty of room for more food on the dessert list!  See the previous post for all the details of who is bringing what and where we are running a little slim.

Dirty Santa will be played, just like in past years.  This year we'll be doing Accessories as gifts, instead of just bringing what you want.  This means jewelry, scarves, make-up, purses, make-up brushes and/or bags, etc.  As a general rule of thumb, if it isn't a gift you would want to receive from a close friend for Christmas, then consider bringing something else.  Try to cap the gift at a $15 value, and definitely don't exceed $20 in value.

Finally, there will be a raffle.  Everyone who shows up will be entered once, and everyone who brings a food item will be entered more than once.  There will be several raffle items to choose from, so multiple winners will be picked.  Increase your chances by volunteering to bring food!!!

We also have one other special tradition for our Christmas Party: CHRISTMAS JAMMIES!!!!  Start finding your favorite tacky Christmas Pajamas and get ready for a night of fun!!!

I'm looking forward to having you in my home on Monday night.  It will be a very special time of celebration, as well as a great way to officially kick off the 2016 Indoor Season.

See you Monday!!!!!

Christmas Party Details

It's that time of year again!!!  Time for our annual Christmas Party!!!!

This Christmas Party is held every year at the Curry House, and we typically do a lot of eating and play Dirty Santa.  This is traditionally open to ALL Bordeaux Winterguard members, and this year is NO exception!  This party is open to all of our Bordeaux members, grades 6-12.

There are currently two polls on Twitter with regard to the details of this event:

The first is about the date.  We are either going to host this party on Monday, December 7th, at 6 pm or Monday December 14th, at 6:30 pm.  There are a few things to be mindful of with these two dates, the primary two being that the 14th is during finals week, and it is the same day as one of the Varsity's clinics.

The second poll is about how we are going to handle Dirty Santa.  There was a LOT of disparity between gifts last year, so we are going to categorize the gifts you guys bring.  You have two options:  Ornaments, or Accessories (i.e. jewelry, scarves, purses, make-up or make-up bags, etc).  We'll still try to cap these gifts at a value of $15 or so, but what we bring is up to you.  Hopefully this makes the Dirty Santa part of our party not quite as dirty.   ;)

Please take a few seconds and make a vote!!!!  You have no room to complain otherwise!!!  Check the Bordeaux Winterguard Twitter Page for all the details!!!!

Naturally, the other big thing we do is eat.  This year, I'm going to do a sign-up for food instead of letting everyone bring what they want.  Since there are so many more of us this year than last, I'm posting a sign-up list below.  Once it is full, it is full.  Each of these items will correspond to a number of entries in our raffle, which I will provide more details about later in this post.

Raffle Details:

Each year I do a raffle for this party.  This year, I'm not just doing one, but three or four.  Instead of putting all my eggs in one basket, I'm putting them into a few so I can have more than one winner.  They'll be categorized too, that way you can choose which one you'd rather have as your names are drawn.  Here's how it works:

Each person who shows up gets to put their name in the bag once.  You can earn additional tickets by bringing food and supplies.  I also allow my seniors to put their name in one extra time than everyone else.  Once the time for the raffle comes, I'll draw 5 names (one for each potential raffle gift), and one at a time you'll have the opportunity to pick your happy.

I'm super excited about our party!!!!  Remember to keep your votes coming on Twitter and to let me know what you want to bring.  I'll keep the list updated as we move along!!!!

A Few Show Changes

Planning the shows for any indoor season is, at best, a stab in the dark until I know exactly how many performers I have in each ensemble and exactly who those performers are.

With that said,  I've made a few changes now that I know just who I've got and where I've got them.  They aren't major changes, but they are changes nonetheless.

The first change is for Bordeaux Varsity.  After doing some thinking about our color palette and taking a deeper look at our floors, I've made a change to the Varsity costumes.  Instead of using the cool toned dress we were considering before, I've decided to use this one instead:

This costume better follows the colors of the sparrow itself, and it will be more neutral in nature.  It also allows us to use our beige floor, instead of the stark white one.  Silks will all follow the neutral / earth toned color palette as well.  There will be lots of browns, creams, and hints of light pink and purple.

The second change is for Bordeaux Junior Varsity.  The JV group will still be doing the same show, but I've adapted the costume for the performers I have.  This is the costume we will use:

This costume (paired with leggings) allows us to pop a little more on the floor, and it since it is a solid color with lots of texture to it, our props will be easier to match (YES!!! There will be props!!!).  I'm pretty excited about this costume and what it will allow us to do on the floor!

The next change is for the Bordeaux Cadets.  Since the cadets are doing such a sassy show, I felt like they needed an even sassier costume to go with it.  This is the costume we will use:

We'll use all 3 colors, and with 15 girls in the ensemble, there will be 5 girls in each color of this costume.  We'll also pair these with black leggings, so be on the lookout for a good pair of black leggings to go with them!

The last change is for the Bordeaux Majorettes.  Since this show is also very sassy, I felt like there needed to be more sass in the costume we chose to wear.  The adjusted costume will do just that, while still providing a little more coverage than the traditional majorette costumes.

This costume will allow us to have the fundamental dance focus we are striving for this year, while also giving us some room to work on baton technique.  It flows well, and will look fabulous on all of our performers in this ensemble.

I absolutely cannot wait to get started on this indoor season!!!  Remember that your contracts (going out today) are due back no later than Wednesday!!!

HOOOOORAAAAYYY for INDOOR!!!!!!!!

2016 Show Reveal

It's hard to believe that the end of marching season is so near, but it definitely is!  That means it is time to start thinking about the 2016 Indoor Season!!!

I've spent a lot of time thinking about what shows to do, and what specifically I want to spend our season focusing on.  This year, I've decided to keep all of our shows happy and sassy, with an emphasis on weapons, movement, and toss technique.  Each ensemble will approach these 3 things in its own way, but these will be the primary elements our shows are created around.

With that in mind..... here we go!!! :D

Bordeaux Winterguard - SAA

Show Title:  His Eye is on the Sparrow

Show Music:  "His Eye is on the Sparrow" by Lauryn Hill and Tanya Blount (From Sister Act II)

This show will focus VERY heavily on movement, both with equipment and without.  Part of bumping up to SAA is upping the ante with our body incorporation.  This is the perfect song and show to do this with.  We'll use a plain white floor and this costume:

We'll use mostly cool colors for our silks: purples, blues, and hints of magenta.  Our goal is to move with the same grace as the flight of a sparrow.  This show will be beautiful from start to finish, and for the first time in 3 years, my varsity girls get to SMILE!!! :D

....although.... let's be honest..... you know it will still be highly emotional.... just of a different persuasion.

Bordeaux Junior Varsity - Cadet/Novice

Show Title:  That Smile

Show Music:  "That Smile"  From the Broadway Musical That's Only Life

I'm not 100% sure which class this group will compete in.  It will depend on how many students will audition, how many I take, and what age these students are.  If I wind up with all middle school students, we will compete in the Cadet class.  If I wind up combining high school and middle school students, we will compete in the Novice class.  Even if we compete in the Cadet class, this ensemble will still be called Bordeaux JV.

Regardless of which class this group ends up competing in, this is the show the JV group will do.  It is charming and upbeat, and allows us to create a sassy show that's full of life.  This show will have a weapon focus.  The vocal breakdown about 2/3's of the way through the song will be a weapon face-off with rifles and sabers.  It's going to be tons of fun!

We'll take a black floor and cover it in large, multi-colored dots.  We're going to use mostly cool colors for these dots, and use neon colors in our costumes and in our silk choices.  We'll also wear this costume:

We'll pair these pants and this top with a pair of black leggings and a black camisole.  This will keep your bellies and you legs covered, since this is a crop top and the pants are sequined lace.  We're going to have a TON of fun with this show, and I cannot wait to get started on it!

Bordeaux Cadets

Show Title: Girl Party

Show Music:  "Girl Party" by Mack Z

This show is going to be one giant girls-night-out celebration.  We won't use a floor for this group, but the costumes will more than make up for that!

We'll pair the leotard and the leggings, and each performer will have 1 of the 4 skirt colors.  This show will be cute, sassy, and age appropriate.  I cannot wait to put it together!

Watch the Youtube video here:  Or click the direct link HERE.

Bordeaux Majorettes

Show Title:  Labels or Love?

Show Music:  "Labels or Love?" by Fergie (edited)

This is show is SASSY!!!!!!!  We will use this show to explore the most important question a woman will ever ask herself:  What better way is there to get over a break up than with a shopping trip?  It is going to be full of life and character, and naturally, sassy beyond sassy. :D  We'll wear these costumes:

Black is the only appropriate color for such a sassy show.  We'll spice it up with lots of color in our props (yes... PROPS!!!) and in our equipment choices.  It will be TONS of fun!!!

I hope you guys are as excited about these shows as I am!!!  They are going to be absolutely FABULOUS!!!!  Get ready for indoor, my dears!!!  The season is just around the corner!!!

I Wonder...

This blog is so little checked during the Summer and Fall months that I have no issues posting this here now.  :D  (mostly because I'm excited.... but also because I'm bad at keeping secrets, and this lets me share the news while keeping the secret too)

I already know what shows we are doing for the 2016 Winter Season, and I also know exactly what costumes we are wearing.  :D

Yes, you will still have to wait until November to find all of this information out.

Yes, I am evil.

NO.... I do not care. :D

A Wonderful Ending to an Already FANTASTIC Year!

The Bordeaux Winterguard finished the season in 5th place on the MIA circuit.  For their first year out, I could not be more proud of what they did, how they performed, or how much growth each girl saw throughout the season.

They also performed as the final ensemble at the New Albany Indoor Association's 2nd Annual Indoor Showcase.  They had a good final run of the show, and it was great to get to show New Albany just what all this fuss has been about!

Now it's time to put away the indoor floor and start thinking about the Fall!!!

Until next year, my dears!!!

The Northeast Mississippi Indoor Championships

This past weekend was the 2015 Northeast Mississippi Indoor Championships at Northeast Community College.  Both the Bordeaux Majorettes and Bordeaux Winterguard competed, and I am happy to report that BOTH ENSEMBLES are gold medalists!!!

The majorettes rocked their final competitive performance of Diamonds, and I could not have been more proud of them!  This performance was also the first time they've performed the entire show in public since we missed so many rehearsals because of the weather.  For practicing only an hour and a half once a week, these girls are rock stars to perform as well as they do with so little instruction!!!

Bordeaux Winterguard absolutely rocked the house!!!  We made a few more minor changes to the show the week following Spring Break, and the girls NAILED their performance, including a pretty intense saber feature that got added that week.  I could literally be seen dancing for joy where I was sitting!!!  The energy level was high, the performance was spectacular, and the crowd rejoiced with them in the end!!!

We also took a lot of pictures at this show.  Here are a few of my favorites:

Tomorrow we head down to Jackson to prepare for what will end up being the girl's final competitive performance of the season.  This is such a bittersweet moment, but I couldn't have asked for a better group of girls to take this journey with!!!  Here's to one last competitive run!!!  Make it the best one yet, and remember who you are performing for!!!

Bordeaux Winterguard: Mid-Season

Mid-season began for us with production week of the 2015 NAHS Musical: Mary Poppins.  Since most of the girls were involved with the musical in some shape or fashion, rehearsals stopped the week of the musical.  We also did not get to practice at all the week following the musical because of the weather.  The girls literally went two solid weeks in the mid-season without a practice.

Our first practice after the Brandon Show was the morning before we drove to Southaven.  The girls did their best, and despite a not-so-great run, they still managed to finish in the top five of their class!!!

In the weeks following the Southaven show, the girls got down to work and really started cleaning everything we've been working on.  We changed a few things and added a few things, and wound up with two more solid finishes before the mid-season ended.

At the South Pontotoc show the girls finished first in their class, and had what I still believe was their best run of the season to date.  Everything was clean and polished!  It was exactly what we needed going into the next show because it gave the judges a clean read of what wasn't working from a Design and GE standpoint.

The majorettes also attended their first competition at South Pontotoc!!!  They really wowed the crowd and looked absolutely STUNNING while they did so!!!

The next week at Pearl the girls had another solid run and finished second in their class.  This was after an entire week of MASSIVE changes to the show design, so I was that much more proud of them for remembering it all!!!  Especially given that it was also another week we missed school because of the snow!!!

Here are a few pictures from the mid-season shows:

The girls also had a little fun during the snow days the lead into Spring Break.  The snow in New Albany actually accumulated at 6-8 inches!!!  So.... I challenged the girls to make auxiliary-themed snowmen!!!  Here is a collage of a few of my favorites:

Mid-season was a wonderful few weeks of constant forward progression!!!!  The girls truly rocked it and came into their own with the show!!!!

Bordeaux Winterguards: Start of the Season

Indoor season this year got off to a bit of an unexpected start.  Things changed, plans fell through, and eventually the decision was made to combine all of the Winterguard ensembles into a single entity, thus creating the 2015 New Albany Bordeaux Winterguard.

Naturally, when the group dynamic changed, it was time to re-pick a show that better fit the group of girls I had after everything was said and done with.  What started out as hectic, insane, and a bit unnerving suddenly turned into the absolute best thing that could have happened to us!

I decided to go with a new show design and song:  I See Fire by Ed Sheeran.  We painted the floor, picked new costuming, and in January, we got straight to business.

The girls started killing it right out of the gate!!!  They were first place in their class at the Horn Lake Field Day, and they were first place again at the Pearl Field Day Night Show.  The judges were blown away with how strong their initial performances were, and the girls were thrilled to be having that kind of success their first few shows on a circuit.  It was a wonderful way to start the season!!!

A few weeks later the girls traveled to Brandon, Missisippi, for the Brandon Show.  Once again, they finished strong and came out on top, despite the fact that they had missed a practice that week due to some scheduling conflicts!

The girls started the season stronger than any group I have ever taught.  It was absolutely wonderful to see them enjoy what they were doing and to be rewarded for their efforts!!!

Here are a few pictures from the early shows, including a picture of Feu, our adopted mascot for the season.

These girls are wonderful!!!  The season got off to an incredible start this year!!!!

Blogging Palooza....

Just get ready....

It dawned on me after posting on the Auxiliary Blog today that I haven't updated this blog ALL SEASON LONG.  Like seriously.... it still has the old shows on here.

So.... today I'm going to try to make up for this MASSIVE indiscretion!!!  I'm going to break it up into 3 primary blogs:  The early season, the mid season, and The Northeast Circuit Championships.  I'll finish it up with a blog about Championships this weekend, and will update it again after Saturday with results and information about the 2nd Annual New Albany Indoor Showcase!!!

Stay tuned!!!  Lots of good stuff coming your way!!!!
